Codex Entry 93: On Dalish landships For nonDalish The Dalish, who unite in small groups of blood relatives, travel in ornately carved wagons known as aravel, pulled by large white stags called halla. The aravel are a sight to behold, with their graceful curves and adorned with wide hoods and bright silken cloths that flutter in the wind, often displaying the noble banners that once adorned the roofs of that family’s houses. Most humans refer to the aravel as “landships,” as in a strong wind, it can seem as if the elves are sailing long boats with sails billowing overhead to announce their arrival (or deter others). The halla are unique to the elves, and are considered stubborn and nearly impossible to train by anyone but elven handlers. To the Dalish, they are noble creatures, superior in breeding to horses. Most humans would agree that the halla are as beautiful as the elves themselves; the fact that many imperial nobles pay a high price for halla horns that make their way into Tevinter is an affront that the Dalish find unforgivable. Few among us have had the chance to see the Dalish landships up close. Any human who spots them on the horizon should make a quick retreat. Few Dalish clans are welcoming to humans who intrude on their camps, and more than one tale speaks of troublemaking humans who ended up being riddled with Dalish arrows.

From “In Pursuit of Knowledge: The Travels of A Chantry Scholar,” by Brother Genitivi.

For Dalish PCs “We are the Dalish: keepers of the lost lore, wanderers of the solitary path. We are the last pure elves. Never again shall we submit.”

The Oath of the Dales

Someone once told me that humans flee when they see the sails of our aravels flying above the treetops. I say, let them flee. The humans have taken everything from us—our homeland, our freedom, our immortality. What is a little fear compared to the horrors they have inflicted upon us? I recite the Oath of the Dales to myself each day when I sleep and when I wake: “Never again shall we submit.” Never again.

The keeper says that one day the Dalish will find a home that we can call our own. But why? Why should we tie ourselves to stone constructions like the humans and the dwarves? What is wrong with the life we have now? We owe nothing to anyone, we have no master but ourselves, and we go where the halla and the gods lead us. There is nothing more wonderful than riding an aravel as it speeds through the forest, pulled by our halla. We are truly free, for the first time in our people’s history. Why should we change this?

From the journal of Taniel, clan hunter.
